Last nights session & Plough problems…

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Last nights session proved to be a bit of an adventure!

Everybody turned up to find that The Plough has unexpectedly shut.

I couldn’t make the it because I was doing the sound for Dave Ferrard’s gig as part of the Leytonstone Festival however things I found out by text half way through Dave’s first set which was a bit of a shock!

Our sessioneers being resourceful people immediately relocated to the Pig & Whistle and played in the garden.

As the pic shows it seems to have gone very well.

Our current information is that the problem with the Plough is a cleaning issue and it will be re-open again by the weekend but I’ll post any further information I get here.

The chaps also arranged an informal summer session for August 11th. I’ll post more about this later.

Other Theresa at the Leytonstone Festival

Friday, July 10th, 2009

I’m doing a couple of gigs with Other Theresa at the Letyonstone Festival this week.

We have a preview of our Edinburgh Fringe show “A Bit of the Other” at The Sheepwalk, 692 High Road Leytonstone this Thursday the 16th.

Doors open at 8:00 and the show includes some special guests familiar to club regulars – Alan Neville and Simon Vogel. Admission is free.

We’re also supporting “4 Poofs and a Piano” the next night at The Heathcote Arms, 344 Grove Green Road, E11 4EA.

For those who don’t know Theresa is a Walthamstow based performance poet kind of like Victoria Wood but with swearing! I do the music.

Would be great to see you there.

The Next Session – Tuesday 14th July

Friday, July 10th, 2009

The next session is this Tuesday the 14th kicking off at 8:00pm

As always admission is free.

It’s the last one before September so be sure to turn out and make it a good one!

Summer Special – Saturday 15th August 2009 – Anonyma

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Mary Mc Laughlin and Anne Lister performed together as the duo Anonyma from 1984 to 1989, touring widely in the UK, the US and Ireland, and releasing their acclaimed album Burnt Feathers on the Fellside label. Anne and Mary were known for their inventive arrangements and stunning harmonies, as well as their choice of material which ranged from their own distinctive compositions to traditional songs.

Since then Mary and Anne have followed solo careers (Mary in the US, Anne in the UK) and there have been few chances for them to meet up and work together. However in August 1009 Mary is coming to the UK for her first visit in many years and they will play a few concert dates together – including Walthamstow Folk!

Please note this gig is on a Saturday. Doors open 7:30pm.

Johnny Collins RIP

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Just got this sad email from George Papavgeris.

“Our friend, mentor, long time resident and president of Herga Folk Club is no more. True to his muse to the end, he had a fatal heart attack while on tour in Poland on Sunday 5th July. Our thoughts now are with Joyce and with Johnny’s family. We will post more relevant information as it becomes available.

The Big Fellow has gone. His voice is still.
But not in our hearts.
‘…Haul away to heaven God be at my side…’”

Very sad news.
